Chiropractic or Physiotherapy? What's the Difference?

A common question we hear is-

"Should I see a chiropractor or a physiotherapist?"

The short answer is this.

Both professions help people move better, recover from injury and reduce pain.

Both use evidence-based treatments.

Both encourage exercise and healthy movement.

In many cases, chiropractors and physiotherapists work together and complement each other.

The real difference lies in how we assess the problem and the focus of our care.

We Start by Asking "Why?"

At Lane Cove Chiropractic, we're interested in more than where it hurts.

We're interested in why it hurts.

A sore shoulder may not begin in the shoulder.

Recurring headaches may involve the neck.

Low back pain may be related to the way your hips, pelvis and spine move together.

Rather than chasing symptoms, we look at how your whole body is functioning.

Our goal is to identify the underlying cause whenever possible.

The Nervous System Matters

Your spine does more than support your body.

It protects your nervous system.

Every movement you make, every step you take and every time you reach for a cup of coffee, your brain is constantly receiving information from your muscles and joints.

Healthy joints send clear information.

Restricted or poorly functioning joints send less accurate information.

Research suggests this can influence movement, balance, coordination and muscle control.

One reason chiropractors use spinal adjustments is to help restore healthy movement and improve the quality of information travelling between the body and the brain.

It's About Function, Not Simply Pain

Many people think chiropractic is simply about "putting bones back into place."

That isn't how we think about it.

Our focus is improving how your body functions.

Pain is important.

But so are:

• Balance.

• Posture.

• Mobility.

• Coordination.

• Strength.

• Confidence in movement.

When your body functions better, it's easier to stay active.

Staying active is one of the most powerful things you can do for your long-term health.

What About Exercises?

Another common misconception is that chiropractors don't prescribe exercises.

Nothing could be further from the truth.

Exercise is one of the most important tools we have.

Depending on your condition, your care may include:

• Mobility exercises.

• Strength training.

• Balance exercises.

• Stability training.

• Running or walking advice.

• Postural exercises.

• Lifestyle recommendations.

The difference is that we often combine these with hands-on care to help restore normal joint movement before asking the body to strengthen and adapt.

Many patients find this combination helps them move more comfortably and exercise more effectively.

When Physiotherapy May Be the Better Choice

Physiotherapists are highly skilled health professionals.

There are situations where physiotherapy may be the most appropriate first step.

For example:

• Rehabilitation after surgery.

• Significant muscle or tendon tears.

• Complex neurological rehabilitation.

• Sports-specific return-to-play programs.

Like all healthcare, the best treatment depends on the individual.

Sometimes the Best Care Is Both

Healthcare doesn't need to be a competition.

Many patients benefit from seeing both a chiropractor and a physiotherapist.

One profession may focus on improving joint function and movement.

The other may focus on longer-term rehabilitation or strength.

When practitioners communicate well and work together, patients often receive the best possible care.

So, Which Should You Choose?

If your problem involves:

• Neck pain.

• Back pain.

• Headaches.

• Poor posture.

• Joint stiffness.

• Reduced mobility.

• Recurring spinal problems.

• Difficulty moving as well as you'd like.

A chiropractor is an excellent place to start.

If your primary need is:

• Rehabilitation after surgery.

• Recovery from a major muscle or tendon injury.

• A specialised neurological rehabilitation program.

A physiotherapist may be the right choice.

If you're unsure, ask.

An experienced health professional should always help you find the care that's most appropriate for your situation.

Our Philosophy

After more than 40 years of caring for families in Lane Cove, one belief has only become stronger.

Health is about much more than getting rid of pain.

It's about helping you move well enough to enjoy your life.

Whether that's running a marathon, lifting weights, playing with your grandchildren, travelling overseas or simply gardening without discomfort.

That's why our care combines hands-on treatment with exercise, movement advice and practical lifestyle strategies.

Our goal isn't to make you dependent on chiropractic.

Our goal is to help you become stronger, more resilient and more confident in your body.

Because when you move well, it's easier to live well.

If you've been wondering whether chiropractic is right for you, we'd be happy to answer your questions and help you decide on the best path forward.
